5 Little Known Ways To Get Major Deals on New Furniture
I always say that working for fashion and home decor brands has made me cheap. It’s mostly because I know how much items like clothing and furniture cost to make, and how much they’re marked up. I also know that, sometimes, the only difference between a $600 bar stool and a $400 one, is that one has a tag with a high-end brand name, because there’s a good chance they were manufactured by the same company.
Alas, I’m always looking for furniture deals that are more aligned with what I think an item is actually worth, and lucky for you, I’ve gotten pretty good at figuring our how to get new items at a discount! Here are my favorite methods for finding brand-new furniture for much less than the sticker price.
Try Salvage Stores

Would you like to save this?
Salvage stores (also known as liquidation stores or warehouse stores) have to be my favorite way to find smaller accent pieces, like ottomans, arm chairs and lamps. The items are usually open-box returns and seasonal overstock from mass market retailers like Amazon and Target, and about 40-60% less than what you’d pay in stores.
I actually have a blog post about how to find your local liquidation store. And, if you don’t live near one, you can also shop at online salvage stores like Bullseye Deals, an eBay shop that only sells Target liquidation merchandise.
Buy Floor Models

If you’re in a traditional furniture store and spot an item you love, ask if the store will sell the floor model, or the actual piece in the store. Most retailers eventually get rid of their items to make way for the new, and will see the pieces at a big discount to clear them out. You may have to wait a few weeks (or even a few months) until it’s time to refresh the floor, but it can be well worth the wait.
Shop Open-Box Deals

Lots of big retailers now have an open-box deals section of their site, including Wayfair, Pottery Barn, and West Elm. These items are usually returns that the store can no longer sell new, but are generally perfectly fine. I purchased a brand-new custom arm chair from Wayfair’s open box section for about 30% off, which was a big discount considering the chair was $800.
I also use this trick on eBay by shopping a brand name + open box, i.e. “Loloi open box” or “Visual Comfort open box.”
Shop via Google Images
This is one of my favorite hacks to finding a better price on an item I love: upload a photo of it into Google images and see what comes up. Lots of times, retailers like Wayfair, Amazon, Home Depot, and even Pottery Barn will carry the same items, but one may be running a promotion or offer an open box deal. I’ve even found new items I wanted for big discounts on eBay.
Check Chairish

Chairish is known as an antiques and vintage marketplace, but I’ve also found retailers and brands selling open-box and overstock items there, too. The brand Cloth & Co, for example, which is behind lots of furniture collabs with designers like Jean Stoffer, sells overstock versions of their collections here.
To find the best deals, try searching specific brand names of items you want, or dropping a photo of the item into Google image search to see if a Chairish deal pops up.
