How to Incorporate Interior Decorating Trends Into Your Home
Home decor trends change faster than ever these days, and it’s easy to get blinded by the shiny (or matte!) objects that home retailers come out with every few months.
While some trends are worth paying attention to, others can derail the style of your home and set you up for a dated-looking space in just a few years. So which trends should you indulge in, and which should you avoid? Here’s my take.
How to use decorating trends in your home
1: You don’t have to use them all. Or like any of them.
Trends in home decor are like trends in fashion. Just because the kids are wearing crop tops and 90s-inspired athleisure doesn’t mean you have to run out and grab a bright red FILA tracksuit if you’re more of a J. Crew gal. Some trends will speak to your personal style and work in your home, and others won’t. Take the ones you like and work them into your space to give it a fresh update.
2: Use trends in smaller doses
When it comes to decorating with trends, don’t adopt one and decorate your entire home in it, i.e. going full modern farmhouse in every room. That’s a recipe for an outdated space in a few years.
Design experts generally agree that the best bet is to keep your larger pieces classic. So, your sofa, your bed, your dining room furniture. Go for something simple and high-quality, then layer on trends with things like throw pillows, area rugs, accents, even lighting.

3. Don’t mix-and-match too many trends
The thing I see with trends these days is there are SO many of them. This can make it hard to pick, and stick to, an aesthetic. When you fall in lust with too many decorating styles, your house ends up looking like the clearance aisle of Homegoods instead of like a cohesive, intentional space. (Ask me how I know.)
Instead, go for one macro trend. If you love the moody, modern cottage look happening right now, go with that. If you prefer the boho, Anthropologie vibe, choose that one. Write it down if you need to so you remember what you’re trying to achieve with your decor before making impulse buys.
4: Adopt trends early
Trend cycles are about 10-ish years. Think about white kitchens or modern farmhouse. My thought is, if you see a new trend you love, especially if it’s an expensive or time-consuming trend (like a paint color or tile floor style), do it as soon as you can. That way, you get the most life out of it as possible.
