Contrast Trim: 8 Gorgeous Color Trim & White Wall Combos

I love a contrast trim situation. Pairing white walls and colored trim reminds me of historic New England colonials and ornate tudors, and it’s such an easy way to add interest to a room that’s already painted white.

I recently did just that in my playroom. The room was painted Benjamin Moore Simply White when we moved in years ago, and it’s kind of just been this boring, cluttered space ever since. I didn’t feel like painting the entire space, and wanted something a little bit fun and different from the other rooms in the house. So, I painted the trim Benjamin Moore Blue Spruce and I couldn’t love it more.

It completely changed the feel of the room without the time or cost of repainting the wallsโ€”and it got me thinking about how many other paint colors would work beautifully for contrast trim. Here are some of my favorite options if you want to try the look in your own home.

7 Beautiful Color Trim & White Wall Combos

Dark Blue Trim & White Walls

Design by Chan + Eayrs

If you want contrast trim that feels classic rather than trendy, dark slate blue or navy are safe bets. Against crisp white walls, deep blue reads polished and architectural. I especially like this look in offices, nurseries or bedrooms where a darker trim can add a little weight and sophistication.

Light blue trim gives you contrast without the heaviness of darker colors. It feels airy and coastal, especially paired with warm whites or soft creams. This is a great option for bedrooms, bathrooms, or playrooms where you want something cheerful but still calm.

Black trim is bold, but in the right space, it looks incredible. The contrast against white walls highlights every window, door frame and molding detail in the room. It works particularly well in homes with interesting architectural trim or millworkโ€”or in spaces where you want a slightly modern, graphic feel.

Sage green trim is slightly unexpected but still subtle, which makes it one of my favorite options for contrast trim. It brings in a natural, earthy feel without overpowering the space. If you like decorating with wood tones, antiques or vintage pieces, this combination works especially well.

I love olive green in almost any context. Against white walls, it adds warmth and a slightly tailored look without feeling overly dark. I think this combination works especially well in living rooms, dens and hallways where you want a little contrast but nothing too bold.

Beige/Mushroom Trim & White Walls

Beige trim creates a very soft, tonal contrast that feels warm and layered rather than dramatic. Instead of the trim disappearing into the walls like standard white-on-white paint, it gently outlines the room. Itโ€™s a good option if you want something a little different but still very neutral.

Cream trim paired with white walls creates a subtle contrast that feels soft and traditional. Itโ€™s a good way to warm up bright white paint while still keeping the room light and neutral. This combination works particularly well in older homes where a slightly warmer palette feels more natural than stark white trim.
