10 Best Paint Colors for Gray Floors (LVP + tile)
Back in 2015 when I worked at Wayfair, I remember writing a blog post about “How to make a brown couch look fresh.” At the time, decorating styles were leaning toward trends like punchy, preppy patterns (yellow chevron, anyone?), all-gray-everything and modern farmhouse. The brown sofa, which was everywhere in the late 90s and early 2010s, just didn’t go with these new styles, and people wanted to know how to work around their sofas without getting rid of them.

Would you like to save this?
That’s all to say: I feel like gray flooring, particularly gray-toned LVP or “wood-look” tile flooring is the new brown couch. Builders ran away with the gray flooring trend in the mid-2010s, and now that color trends are warmer and decorating style is leaning towards modern cottage and layered maximalism, people feel stuck with their gray floors that don’t really fit the vibe.
The good news is, like the brown couch of decorating eras past, there is a way to work with the gray floors, especially when it comes to the paint colors you pair them with.
Certain paint colors will make your gray floors look dated, or even dingy. While others will work with the tones in your flooring to make your home feel harmonious. And, the even better news, is that you aren’t stuck with painting the walls gray, too (despite what you builder thought when he also painted every room in your house gray).
Here are some of the best paint colors to pair with gray LVP or tile flooring.
Fresh neutrals
If you prefer a neutral look, here are some no-fail shades to start with.
Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace

Chantilly Lace is a “true white,” in that it doesn’t any any super-obvious undertones that will clash with your gray flooring. This is good because warm-toned paint colors (like BM Simply White or SW Alabaster) can look dingy next to cool-toned flooring. Cool-white paint colors, like BM Decorator’s White, can make the room veer into “cold” territory.

Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter

If you have your heart set on warm-toned neutral walls, go for a shade of greige. A true tan or beige will emphasize the cool tones in the flooring even more (and make tan-toned walls look muddy), so a gray-toned beige like Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter or Pale Oak will be better bets.

Benjamin Moore White Dove

If you’re worried that true white will feel cold in your space, try an off white with some depth. White Dove is an off white with neutral undertones, so it feels warm, without being yellow (which gray floors would emphasize).

Rich Colors
In general, most “dirty” paint colors will work well with gray-toned flooring, as long as they aren’t too warm. By dirty, I mean that they have a touch of gray or brown mixed in that makes them more muted, and less bright. I find that bright or “clean” paint colors look jarring when paired with gray flooring.
Benjamin Moore Silhouette

This rich, brown-tinged gray makes gray flooring feel intentional, and will cozy up the space, too.
Also Try: Farrow & Ball Mole’s Breath
Sherwin Williams Pewter Green

Pewter Green is deep green with a gray undertones, that would work well in an office, bedroom or as a cabinet color with gray flooring.
Also try: Benjamin Moore Intrigue
Benjamin Moore Providence Blue

A classic, slightly muted blue like Providence Blue works with gray floors because it shares the same cool undertone, creating a cohesive, low-contrast palette.
Also try: Farrow & Ball DeNimes
Benjamin Moore Oilcloth

Oilclothโs soft, earthy green brings warmth into a gray-heavy space, helping balance the cooler tones of gray LVP floors. Because itโs a muted, gray-infused green, it reads as a neutral itself, so it complements rather than competes.

Sherwin Williams Rosemary

Rosemary is a deeper, moodier green with gray undertones (but not quite as gray at Pewter Grren), which makes it a natural pick for gray flooring. The richness adds contrast and dimension, but the shared gray base keeps the overall look cohesive.
Also Try: Benjamin Moore Vintage Vogue
Benjamin Moore Wales Gray

Wales Gray is a soft blue-gray, so it naturally aligns with the undertones already present in gray flooring. The subtle color shift keeps the palette from feeling one-note while still reading calm and cohesive.
Also Try: Benjamin Moore Smoke, Sherwin Williams Tradewind
Sherwin Williams Soulmate

Soulmate is a muted mauve tone that warms up gray floors without clashing with them. Its gray undertone keeps it from skewing too pink, making it feel balanced and surprisingly neutral alongside cooler flooring.

Paint colors to avoid with gray floors
It also helps to know what sorts of colors to avoid with gray floors … so here’s a list of those, too!
Cool grays
Cool grays will make your whole space look drab and cold, so skip ’em.
Sandy Tans
The warmth in tans and pink-beiges will clash with gray flooring.
Bright colors
Bright shades feel jarring (and a little cheap) next to gray floors.
And finally, a note on sampling
As with any paint color, I can’t stress enough how important it is to sample before you commit, especially when you’re working around a specific flooring color. Even gray-toned floors can be different shades of gray. The way a paint color interacts with your floors, your furniture, and your natural light can vary a lot from what you see on a screen or a paint chip. Grab a few Samplize peel-and-stick samples and live with them for a few days before you decide.
