The Best Duvet Covers According to a Home Editor

If you’ve been around here before, you know I love a thrift find, a warehouse sale, a deal of any sort, really. But I am willing to invest more in things that are truly worth the money. I’ll buy less expensive lighting because it can be genuinely hard to tell a $200 light fixture from a $2,000 one. But the difference between polyester sheets and the best sheets you can buy? Huge.

I feel this way about every single thing that goes on a bed, duvet covers included. You don’t need to shell out $500 for the most luxurious one on the market, but paying an extra $30 or $50 for a duvet cover that’s made of breathable materials and has corner loops to told your duvet in place? Totally worth it.

I’ve been a home editor and blogger for 15 years, and in that time I’ve had a chance to test all kinds of bedding in all kinds of price points. The best doesn’t always mean the most expensive. But, a lot of times, the cheap stuff isn’t great.

If you’re looking for the best duvet cover for your bed, I’ve broken down the top ones I’ve tried. I’ve included a range of materials, weights and price points to encompass different sleep preferences and budgets.

Before I get to the list, I also put together a handful of tips about what to look for and what to avoid, that will help you find a good duvet cover in nearly any price range.

Good, general rules for finding a good duvet cover:

  1. Look for corner ties. These are either ties or snaps at each corner of the duvet cover that tie to the loops on the corners of the duvet insert. Without these, your duvet will end up bunched and rumpled at the bottom of the cover within a night or two. If a duvet cover doesn’t have these, keep looking.
  2. Avoid polyester. Overall, I think polyester bedding is terrible. Brands have done a lot of marketing to try and convince consumers that there is a benefit to polyester sheets or duvet covers. They’ll often say tings like “cooling” or “performance,” but at the end of the day, polyester is a plastic fiber has almost no breathability or moisture absorbption. Even if you have the best duvet inserts in the world, enveloping it in a polyester duvet cover is like adding a light plastic layer over it. You will wake up hot and clammy.

And a couple of things to consider when you’re shopping. that are less crucial, but may be a tie breaker if you’re considering a few different options.

  1. Your tolerance for wrinkles. Certain fabrics, like bamboo, silk and linen, wrinkle very easily. Cotton percale, slightly less so, and cotton sateen tends to be the least wrinkle-prone. This might not be the thing you base your entire decision around, but it’s good to keep in mind.
  2. The sizing. Different manufacturers have different measurements for duvet inserts and duvet covers. If you want to ensure a perfect match, buy both from the same brand, or at least check the measurements to ensure they’re at least close. I’ve had king size duvet covers that were 6″ wider than my king size duvet. Again, not the end of the world, but I’d personally prefer if they were roughly the same size.
  3. The type of closure. I personally prefer duvet covers that zip shut because I find them easier to take on and off (is there a bigger pain than changing a duvet?), and I also find that buttons can come undone here and there. That said, there are still duvet covers on this list that have buttons, because overall, they are still great picks.
  4. The weight. I like a lightweight duvet cover for two reasons: one, I’m a hot sleeper. And two, they’re easier to take on and off. I own a heavy duvet cover that I’ve used mid-winter, and I feel like I break into a sweat any time I change it. You might want a heavier weight that really makes you feel good and covered.

The Best Duvet Covers I’ve Tried

Here’s the quick list if you want to get right to it. I’ve expanded on each pick below, including more about the differences between each one in case you’re confused about what type/material of bedding you like.

Best Duvet Cover Overall: The Company Store Classic Cool Cotton Percale Duvet Cover

The white duvet cover on my bed above is The Company Store’s Classic Cool Cotton Percale

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later!

Material: 100% combed cotton percale
Thread count: 300
Corner ties: Yes, four interior ties
Closure: Buttons
Price: $99 – $164
Overall Rating: 9.3

The Company Store has always been a reliable source for great bedding, and its classic cotton percale duvet cover is no exception. I love it because it’s like the Goldilocks of duvet covers: it’s high-quality but not over-the-top expensive, it’s not too heavy or hot, and it’s soft but maintains a crisp look, too.

It’s the perfect pairing with a lofty down comforter because the fabric has enough structure to give the bed that full, fluffy appearance I love, without adding a lot of extra weight.

I first bought this duvet cover for my daughter’s room because I loved one of the many patterns it came in (a pink gingham), and eventually ended up getting a white one for my own bed. I’ve had my daughter’s for two years now, and it washes and holds up well. That’s a pretty good endorsement considering how often kids’ bedding ends up in the laundry.

It’s made from 300-thread-count combed cotton percale, which has a cool, smooth feel and gets softer with washing. It also has four corner ties to hold your insert in place. The only thing I’d change is the button closure, since I prefer a zipper, but that’s a relatively minor complaint.

Overall, if you want a great everyday duvet cover that’s breathable, comfortable, durable and makes your bed look good, this is the one I’d recommend.

Best Value Duvet Cover: Quince Organic Crisp Percale Duvet Cover

Material: 100% organic long-staple cotton percale
Thread count: 280, according to the current product specifications
Corner ties: Yes
Closure: Buttons
Price: $90 – $104
Overall Rating: 9.1

The Quince Organic Cotton Percale Duvet Cover is very similar in feel to The Company Store version, and almost so similar I had a hard time choosing between the two. The Quince version is breathable and crisp, and made from 100% organic cotton.

Quince gets the +1 for price. At $89 – $104 it’s an excellent value for an organic cotton duvet cover.

The Company Store won out for two main reasons. For one, there are more color and pattern options. Both covers come in a range of solid, stripe and gingham options, but The Company Store version has more color options in each category, and also comes in florals, plaids, holiday prints, kid-specific prints and collaboration patterns with Rifle Paper Co., Jean Stoffer, and more. There are seasonal new releases, too.

I also found The Company Store version to be a touch crisper and more breathable, while the Quince cover is slightly heavier and has a more brushed-cotton feeling (almost like if percale had a touch of flannel. It’s nowhere near as heavy or fuzzy as a flannel, that’s just the best way I can describe it). This isn’t really a detraction but more of a personal preference.

All of that said, if I were shopping for a cotton percale duvet cover and wanted to keep the price around $100, this would absolutely be one of my first choices. The king size Quince option is just $104 compared to $164 for The Company Store.

Best Duvet Cover for Hot Sleepers: Cozy Earth Bamboo Duvet Cover

My Cozy Earth bamboo duvet cover in Laurel Stripe, before we painted our bedroom.

Material: 100% viscose from bamboo
Thread count: N/A, bamboo has no thread count
Corner ties: Yes, corner and side snaps
Closure: Concealed zipper
Price: $258 – $308
Overall Rating: 8.8

This duvet cover wins from a pure comfort standpoint. It’s SO soft, breathable and lightweight. It’s a dream to sleep under.

The Cozy Earth duvet cover is made from 100% viscose from bamboo, which has a very different feel from cotton percale. Instead of being crisp and structured, it’s silky and almost weightless.

I tend to sleep hot, so I’m always looking for bedding that doesn’t feel heavy or stuffy, and this is one of the best duvet covers I’ve tried for that. It’s also a good choice if you prefer soft, silky bedding to the crisp, hotel-style feel of cotton percale.

Another thing I love is the construction. It has a zip closure, which I prefer to buttons, plus snaps at the corners and along the sides that correspond to loops on Cozy Earth’s duvet inserts. The side snaps are especially helpful for preventing the insert from shifting, although you can skip those if you’re using an insert from another brand that doesn’t have the corresponding loops.

The one thing that made the percale versions come out ahead, though, is that this one wrinkles much more easily.

My Cozy Earth bamboo sheets are my favorite, and they wrinkle easily, too, but they’re under the duvet, so I don’t care because I can’t see them. With a duvet cover, the wrinkles are front and center, and it doesn’t always look as crisp and polished as I’d like.

It’s also one of the more expensive options on this list. But if you’re a hot sleeper and care more about how your bed feels than keeping it perfectly made, this is probably the one you’ll like best.

Best Cotton Sateen Duvet Cover: Cozy Earth Soft-Wash Cotton Duvet Cover

The beige cover is the Cozy Earth soft-wash cotton duvet cover, which I use over the Cozy Earth bamboo duvet cover for a lightweight extra blanket.

Material: 100% long-staple cotton sateen
Thread count: Not specified
Corner ties: Yes, interior snaps
Closure: Concealed zipper
Price: Starting at $208
Overall Rating: 8.8

If you like the idea of the softness of bamboo bedding, but prefer something with a little more structure, the Cozy Earth soft-wash cotton duvet cover is a great middle ground.

It’s made from 100% cotton sateen, which has a smoother, softer feel than cotton percale, but isn’t quite as silky or drapey as bamboo viscose. It’s also lightweight and breathable, so it’s a great option if you like soft bedding but don’t want anything too heavy or hot.

One of my favorite things about this duvet cover is that it has the same concealed zipper and interior snaps as the Cozy Earth bamboo version. I personally find both of these details make changing a duvet easier, and the snaps help keep the insert from shifting around inside the cover.

Overall, I think this is a great compromise between percale and bamboo. If you want something soft and lightweight, but still want your bed to look reasonably polished, this is a good option.

Best Budget Duvet Cover: California Design Den Luxury Duvet Cover Set, White

This duvet cover, seen in our VT cabin, is excellent quality for the price!

Material: 100% long-staple cotton sateen
Thread count: 400
Corner ties: Yes, four interior ties
Closure: Buttons
Price: Typically around $50โ€“$65 for Full/Queen, depending on sales
Overall Rating: 8.6

If you don’t want to spend $100 or more on a duvet cover, this is an excellent option. We purchased a couple of these for our Vermont Airbnb a few years back, and I was genuinely impressed by how they compared to some of the pricier duvet covers I’ve owned.

The California Design Den duvet cover is made from 100% cotton sateen, so it has a slightly different feel than the cotton percale options on this list. Instead of being crisp and cool, it’s smoother and softer, with a subtle sheen that makes it feel a little more luxurious than its price tag suggests.

One of the biggest selling points is that you’re getting a 400-thread-count cotton duvet cover at a budget price. It’s breathable, comfortable, and has four interior corner ties. It also comes with two matching pillow shams, making it an even better value.

For a guest bedroom, vacation home, or anywhere you’re trying to get good-quality bedding on a budget, I think it’s hard to beat.

Best Kids Duvet Cover: Pottery Barn Kids Chambray Reversible Organic Cotton Duvet Cover

A traditional blue boys room with twin beds
The Pottery Barn Kids Duvets on my boys’ beds a few years ago

Material: 100% organic cotton chambray
Corner ties: Yes, interior snaps on the version I own
Closure: Buttons
Price: $79-$119
Overall Rating: 8.9

I’ve owned these duvet covers for my sons’ beds for more than five years, and they’re still in great shape. If that isn’t a testament to their durability, I don’t know what is.

Pottery Barn Kids makes some of my favorite bedding for kids because the designs are classic enough to grow with them, and the quality is generally really good. I don’t want to replace my kids’ duvet covers every time they move on to a new phase or interest, and these have lasted through several boy’s room re-designs.

And the duvets in their room now

One of my favorite details is the reversible design, with stripes on one side and a solid color on the other. I love a stripe, especially in kids’ bedrooms, but being able to flip the duvet over gives you two different looks without buying another cover.

Other pluses: They’re soft and lightweight, and they don’t wrinkle too easily. The versions I own also have snaps inside to secure the duvet, which is a must.

Best Heavyweight Duvet Cover: Boll & Branch Mosaic Waffle Duvet Cover

Material: 100% organic cotton with a jacquard waffle weave and sateen backing
Corner ties: Yes, four interior ties
Closure: Concealed zipper
Price: Starts at approximately $449
Total Score: 8

If you really like to know you’re under your blankets when you get into bed, this is a top pick. My husband bought this for me for Christmas a couple of years ago (it was actually the earlier version of this specific cover, and it had a standard waffle design instead of the mosaic-style, but otherwise the specs were the same) and it is heavy. Personally, I find it a little too heavy to use except during the coldest points in the year, but I do know that not everyone is 1000 degrees when they sleep, so the weight might actually be a draw for some.

The thing I liked most about the Boll & Branch Mosaic Waffle Duvet Cover is way this one looks on a bed. The waffle pattern gives it a luxurious, layered appearance and it doesn’t winkle easily, so your bed always looks nice and neat.

There are also two drawbacks worth mentioning.

The first is the price. At more than $400, this is a serious investment for a duvet cover. You’re paying for the quality of the materials, but also for the elaborate woven texture and decorative appearance.

The second is that the waffle weave can snag. This is something to be aware of if you have pets that sleep on your bed, since claws can catch the raised threads. Our dog doesn’t sleep with us, but she does sometimes jump on our bed for a nap, which has caused a few snags. I’d also be careful with jewelry around it.

Which duvet cover would I buy again?

If I could only recommend one duvet cover to most people, it would be The Company Store Classic Cool Cotton Percale. It’s the best combination of comfort, price, durability and appearance, and it works with a wide range of bedding styles.

But if you’re a hot sleeper who wants the softest, lightest bedding possible, I actually prefer the Cozy Earth Bamboo Duvet Cover for sleeping. You just have to be willing to live with the wrinkles.

And if you’re trying to get the most for your money, I’d go with Quince. It’s an excellent cotton percale duvet cover at a price that makes buying good bedding feel a lot more accessible.

Ultimately, the best duvet cover is the one that suits how you sleep, how you want your bed to look, and how much maintenance you’re willing to put into keeping it that way. Spending more can absolutely make a difference, but only if you’re paying for the things that matter to you.
